And now it’s time for the next entry in the Animation Lounge. This week we go back to the 1980s and take a look at Appleseed.
Genre: Cyberpunk, Science Fiction, Mecha
Format: OVA (Original Video Animation)
Length: 70 Minutes
Appleseed was originally a manga created by Masamune Shirow in 1985. 3 Years later, Appleseed was adapted into anime format with the release of this OVA. The Appleseed OVA serves as a side story to the manga as it has an original story and characters.
Taking a look at the story of Appleseed, the story follows the adventures of 2 ESWAT (Enhanced SWAT) team members Deunan Knute (Human) and her partner Briareos Hecatonchires (Cyborg). In the world of Appleseed, World War 3 has taken place and humans, cyborgs and Bioroids now live together in a city known as Olympus. This city is run completely by computer, which provides for the everyday needs of the city’s inhabitants. Bioroids are genetically engineered beings created by humans, designed to serve mankind in his everyday life.
In this story of Appleseed, Deunan and Briareos are on the hunt for a group of terrorists that are plotting to put an end to the computer that runs Olympus. Their belief is that by leaving the computer to control everything, the city is being forced into a dictatorship and is losing the very essence of their humanity. However, by using acts of terrorism, they are endangering the people of Olympus. When the terrorists acts lead to the deaths of many ESWAT members, Deunan and Briareos make the case personal and set out to personally hunt down the people responsible.
Story – 7/10. The story follows your basic police investigation story format but overall its enjoyable.
Voice Acting – 5/10 Some of the voice work is pretty weak in this anime. But that’s to be expected considering that anime wasn’t very big in the west during 80s.
Dialogue – 7/10 There are times in the English Dub where its seems the script writers drop the “F” Bomb simply for the sake of an “F” bomb. These happen on a few occasions but luckily they are far apart.
Appeal – 8/10 While this OVA has its faults, its a fun watch overall. The purpose of an OVA is to entice the viewer into reading the manga. Appleseed has developed a big fan-base over the years.
Overall Score – 7/10 Appleseed is an anime to watch if you’re just looking for something fun to do. It’s not exactly an epic adventure but its entertaining to watch.

Extra notes: In 2004, a remake of Appleseed was released. I plan to review that one later down the line.
